Xu Beihong (1895–1953) was a Chinese painter and a prominent figure in the modern Chinese art movement. Known for his pioneering work in blending traditional Chinese art techniques with Western styles, Xu Beihong is celebrated for his mastery of both realistic and expressive forms. He played a key role in shaping the development of modern Chinese painting in the 20th century.

Born in Jiangsu, China, Xu Beihong studied at the Shanghai Art School and later in Paris, where he was influenced by Western academic painting. This exposure to Western realism, particularly the techniques of oil painting, allowed Xu to incorporate these methods into traditional Chinese art, leading to a fusion of both cultures in his work. His most famous subjects include horses, birds, and landscapes, as well as portraits that express a deep connection to Chinese history and cultural heritage.

Xu Beihong is perhaps best known for his iconic horse paintings, such as Galloping Horse, which showcase his ability to combine precise realism with emotional expression. His commitment to modernizing Chinese art while respecting its traditions helped bridge the gap between the past and future, influencing generations of Chinese artists.

A visionary educator, Xu also contributed to the development of art education in China, serving as a professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. His legacy continues to shape the landscape of Chinese art today.
