Ellen Terry ('Choosing') - by George Frederick Watts
Ellen Terry ('Choosing') - by George Frederick Watts
Ellen Terry's time in London's Haymarket Theatre marked a pivotal moment in her life. Alongside her sister Kate, she sat for renowned artist George Frederick Watts, who not only captured their likenesses but also captured Ellen's heart, proposing marriage shortly after. Among Watts's notable portraits of Ellen is 'Choosing,' a masterpiece where she stands at a crossroads of decision, torn between the allure of earthly vanities symbolized by scentless camellias and the nobler path represented by fragrant violets. This iconic painting embodies the inner conflict of choice. Additional famous works include 'Ophelia' and the joint portrait 'The Sisters' featuring Ellen and Kate. Ellen, inspired by Watts's artistry and refinement, sought to honor her family by marrying advantageously. Their union on February 20, 1864, just before Ellen's 17th birthday (while Watts was 46), however, proved challenging. Ellen found herself uncomfortable in the role of a young bride, and the marriage dissolved after ten months. During this time, Ellen temporarily stepped away from the stage, resuming her career by 1866.
