Vincent van Gogh's "White House at Night" is an oil-on-canvas masterpiece painted on June 16, 1890, in Auvers-sur-Oise, shortly before his passing. Currently, it's housed at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.

This painting is a reflection of Van Gogh's inner turmoil, as noted by the Hermitage Museum. The stark red splashes on two windows symbolize psychological tension, while the star represents his anguish. It's believed that van Gogh painted this scene around 8:00 PM, with the prominent star likely being Venus, as suggested by astronomers Donald Olson and Russell Doescher from Texas State University-San Marcos. Interestingly, the house depicted is the same one seen in another of van Gogh's works, "Blossoming Chestnut Tree."

The painting's journey has been tumultuous. It vanished into the private collection of German industrialist Otto Krebs in the late 1920s, only to reappear in 1995 after being lost and hidden for decades. It resurfaced as part of an exhibition showcasing artworks looted by the Soviets at the end of World War II.
